Gundeng, meaning‘rolling the light’, is a type of folk dance of the Han people practiced in Yuhang, Haiyan, and other areas along the Qiantang River. Yuhang Gundeng originated in Wengmei and nearby areas in Yuhang, in Zhejiang Province and has a history of more than 800 years. The dance is performed during festive celebrations and lantern fairs and is highly competitive. The dance is akin to a sport, and places equal value on strength and aesthetics; it is well received by the people. Yuhang Gundeng was included in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2006.
